"Remembering 9/11"

Good Friday, September 11, 2020, to everyone.

Today, we remember or hear/read about 9/11/ 2001.  It was a horrible time and one that was frightening if you were in the NY, Washington, DC and Pennsylvania area where the three planes hit.  Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which triggered major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defined the presidency of George W. Bush.

I was in my classroom that day when the intercom came on for everyone to get silent and to turn the TV on in the room.  We watched in horror because after the attack in D.C.  we didn't know if one was headed to our area in Virginia.  We were to keep the students calm as well as ourselves.  School was closing immediately with parents picking up their children  and after the last bus left the grounds, we, the teachers, could head home.  Each one of us felt the hurt and the sadness at what appeared and later on became an attack on our country.  I will never forget that moment.  I will never forget the damage that was done by these terrorists.  I knew of people who lived in New York as well as DC and with much anticipation we called and we waited to hear if they were okay.  They survived but so many loss their lives on that day.

Where were you and what do you remember on that day, nineteen years ago?  Here in America, we thought we were safe and we still think we are safe but the enemy  prove us wrong.  Peace shall come one day in our lives, either on this side of the world or on the other side.
